73.01% of total households received the highest level of service in Lukhanji during 2012. This is an impressive result with regards to service delivery, as this represents a 14.05% increase in connections over the period under review. Flush toilet sanitation facilities in Lukhanji connected to sewerage network increased from 24194 households in 2005 to 33293 in 2012. This is from 55.13% to 65.06% of total households in the seven year period.
A total of 90.79% households are currently serviced with basic to full levels of service in Lukhanji, 17.78% receiving basic level of water supply in the form of a communal stand pipe within 200m from dwelling. In the period under review only 9.21% of households remained without any water. Lukhanji also has 9.27% of household receiving basic sanitation in the form of a ventilated pit latrine means that a total of 74.33% households are served with basic to full service level sanitation.
FINDINGS
The Department of Water Affairs defines a basic water supply facility as the infrastructure necessary to supply 25 litres of potable water per person per day within 200 metres of a household and with a minimum flow of 10 litres per minute (in case of communal water points) or 6000 litres of potable water supplied per formal connection per month (in case of yard or house connections
The DWA defines a basic sanitation facility as the infrastructure necessary to provide a sanitation facility as the infrastructure necessary to provide a sanitation facility which is safe, reliable, private and protected from the harsh water conditions and which is ventilated and keep smells to the minimum.
The following results were found in terms of households and level of service:
