REASEARCH METHODOLOGY

The central research question of this study is: What are the causes of the water supply and sanitation challenges faced by Lukhanji municipality.

The researcher firstly investigated the current state of the Lukhanji water services and sanitation from a service delivery viewpoint. This entailed an exploratory numerical analysis of service delivery in the Lukhanji area from 2005-2012. This also included research into population and settlement distribution data. This data obtained was then used to inform the research project about the current service delivery challenges pertaining to the municipality, and the backlog it currently faced. Secondly, further analysis was then made within the same data boundaries, in a bigger pool of data, namely the Eastern Cape and South Africa, to compare the trends of water service delivery in the period 2005-2012. Analysis was made into the Blue Drop performance of the Eastern Cape and Lukhanji municipality as well as exploratory research into government funding into municipalities for water and sanitation services. Thirdly, and chiefly, the study assessed the issues influencing the provision of water services and weather these issues come to play within Lukhanji Municipality.
